No one can accuse Monique Lhullier for staying too comfortable for too long. The L.A.-based designer has already conquered the wedding dress market, is creating a lifestyle brand with both daytime appropriate, ready-to-wear looks and home goods, has a fine jewelry line and just changed up her standard runway show from a catwalk to a hybrid tableau presentation. And as of Friday, when Lhuillier debuted her latest collection at New York Fashion Week, she officially become a full-fledged accessories designer, showcasing her first-ever collection of clutches and shoes that will hit stores for fall.
“It’s something I’ve wanted to do for so long,” the designer told Pret-a-Reporter of her foray into accessories backstage before her Lincoln Center-held show on Friday evening. “It looks good.”
Complimenting her fall 2015 collection of jewel-hued satin cocktail dresses and glittery gowns (some of which coming with a menswear-inspired, Kate Moss-as-muse twist), the accessories line features 23 pairs of evening shoes and six clutches ranging from $595 to $3,995 respectively.
Since the designer — who attracted Pitch Perfect 2 star Britney Snow and stylist/reality personality Brad Goreski to her front row — already has a successful line of wedding bands and engagement rings with Blue Nile (and since, you know, it is Valentines Day weekend), we had to ask: What is her own engagement ring story?
“I’ve been married for 20 years now to my husband, so we were in college at the time — I was in fashion school — and he proposed to me at a very busy bar on a Saturday night,” Lhuillier said, smiling. “And I was like, ‘Ohmigod! What does the ring look like?’ And it was just out of tin foil because he said, ‘I know how particular you are so this will do for tonight and we’ll go pick out something you love.”
Insert “Awws” here. We’re guessing the tinfoil has since been replaced.
“Oh yeah,” the designer laughed. “We’ve moved up in the world since my tinfoil ring.”
Since hubby Tom Bugbee now handles her company’s business affairs and was excitedly greeting members of the press in her show’s front row on Friday night (looking like part proud CEO, part beaming husband), we’ll take the makeshift ring as a sign that tinfoil works when given by the right person.
